Shin Chul reveals 철이와 미애 origin story: Miae stood him up seven times

Shin Chul sat down for KBS1's Song큐멘터리 백투더뮤직 시즌2 (episode 41, airing June 28 at 11:10 PM) to walk through a career that started with 500 won and a runaway plan.

He decided to become a DJ in his second year of high school after visiting a nightclub for the first time. He left home with just 500 won, started as an assistant to veteran DJ 깐돌이 — washing seniors' socks along the way — and became a main DJ within a year.

He formed dance duo 붐붐 with DJ 이정효. In 1989, their collaboration with 나미 on 인디안 인형처럼 produced what the show identifies as Korea's first remix album. Being labeled "Nami's backup dancer" rather than recognized for his own musical ability drove him to walk away at the height of their run.

The 철이와 미애 origin story is the episode's headline. After watching 서태지와 아이들 in 1992 and feeling his instincts reawaken, Shin Chul tracked down Miae, then the top dancer at MBC. She rejected him seven times. The eighth attempt worked. Seven rejections for one of the most iconic duos in Korean pop history.
