Five Guys at The Hyundai Seoul: American burger hype, decoded
If you're landing in Seoul and craving an honest-to-god American burger, Five Guys in Yeouido is the move — but go in knowing exactly what you're getting, because the hype is real but so is the wait.
The place lives in The Hyundai Seoul's basement food hall, and it's genuinely massive: red-and-white checkerboard tiles, open kitchen, bar seating, 2-tops, 4-tops, sofas — enough room to breathe even when it's rammed. The vibe is pure American casual diner, nothing fussy. You order at the counter, grab your peanuts (free, unlimited, but eat them in-store only), and stake out a table while you wait for your burger.

Here's the real talk on the menu: there are no combos. Everything is à la carte — burgers run 14,400–17,900 won, fries are 7,400–11,400 won per size, shakes and drinks separate. The fries are a trap: even the small (Little) is about 220–250g, which is roughly 2–3 servings by standard fast-food math. Two people? Order Little. Four people? Go Regular. The fries are cooked twice in peanut oil and come out textured and fluffy, not crispy — if you want shoestring-thin and crunchy, this isn't it. But if you want that boardwalk-style, almost mashed-potato-like interior, you're home.

The burgers themselves are the real draw. Pick either a Little (one patty) or regular (two patties), then layer on 15 free toppings — lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled mushrooms, jalapeños, peppers, multiple sauces, grilled onions, the works. Fresh beef, no additives, cooked to order on the grill. The bun arrives hot and buttery. Bite in and you get proper beef juice, melted American cheese that's almost aggressive in its richness, and whatever toppings you chose. It's legitimately a solid burger — not trendy, not Instagram-baiting, just substantial and satisfying.

One warning: the peanuts are salty. Like, American-diner-salty. They're roasted and salted, and people either love that or find them overwhelming. Worth a taste, but don't expect subtle.
Timing and logistics: Weekday mornings (before noon) and early afternoons are your golden window. Weekends and evenings have visible waits — 100+ people on the Tabling app is normal. The Hyundai Seoul charges 30 minutes free parking, then 2,000 won per 10 minutes; anything over 50,000 won gets you 1 hour free, 100,000 won gets 2 hours free. Card payments only.

The nearest subway is Yeouido Station (Lines 5, 9, Exits 3–4, about 6 minutes walk) or Yeouinaru Station (Line 5, Exit 1, about 5 minutes). The restaurant is in the basement (B1) food hall, near the escalators.

Who this is for: anyone who genuinely misses American burger chains from home, or who wants to taste what the hype is actually about without flying to the US. Not for people hunting budget eats — two people easily spend 50,000+ won. Not for anyone who wants crispy fries or minimalist burgers. But for a solid, no-nonsense American burger experience in Seoul? It's the real thing.
