If you've seen a press release this year claiming "Billboard K-pop 100" placement, you've seen a number that almost nobody understands the methodology of — including, in many cases, the publicists citing it.

We spent six weeks corroborating signals across publicly disclosed Billboard data, talking to three former chart team members, and modeling what set of inputs would reproduce the published rankings. The result: a methodology that is meaningfully different from what most agency PR assumes.

The biggest surprise: physical sales weighting on this chart is roughly half what it is on Billboard's flagship Hot 100. Streaming carries more weight than the cultural reading of the chart suggests. Here's why that matters — and what artists should actually optimize for if K-pop 100 placement is the goal.
